Our History

The Umbrella Network was formerly known as T.R.I.P.S. – Townsville Regional Information Parent Support Group – and established in 1990. A wonderful group of families saw the need for a combined effort in order to get vital services for their children. What many of us now take for granted was actually instigated by those that came before us . They lobbied, fundraised and brought awareness to our community creating service providors such as CCTS and the CP league in Townsville. They were a hub for equipment for families in need as well as emotional support over the phone and in person.

In 2008 after almost 20 years of ‘fighting the good fight’ they were approached by a new group of young and energetic families who were keen to carry on their hard work. It was time for them to sit back and pass over the mantel to ‘us’. While using  their not for profit status a new board was elected and a new persona was created. The name Umbrella Network was chosen because we  COVER ALL CHILDREN.

We were a group of mums who met at the Vincent Early Childhood Development Unit Playgroup. Our children were only little and every week it was an emotional time . Quite often we left in tears and wondered why we were sent on this path? Eventually the sadness lessened and we learnt to take strength from each other and pass information around that helped . Even though we had some very sick little ones within the group as well as trying to cope with the confusion of all that was upon us – these amazing families all assisted in creating The Umbrella Network. Without them we would not be here today. Thank you to all of you – you know who you are!
