Education Queensland Therapy Services

Department of Education and Training, North Queensland Region covers north to Ingham, south to Proserpine and Cannonvale and west to the border. The purpose of Education Queensland (EQ) Therapy Services is to enhance or support students’ educational outcomes by facilitating their access, participation and achievement at school.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY (OT) & PHYSIOTHERAPY (PT) SERVICES

Eligibility criteria 2011

EQ Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy may be available for;

• Students with a verified disability under the Education Adjustment Program including intellectual, physical, vision, hearing, speech-language impairment,autistic spectrum disorder or multiple impairments.
• Students with disabilities enrolled in special schools who are awaiting verification through the Education Adjustment Program
• Students with disabilities enrolled in Prep who are eligible for an EducationQueensland early childhood development program or service Students who are registered for an Education Queensland early childhood development program or service.

EQ OTs and PTs undertake a wide range of activities to ensure a quality service to children and students at school, including:

(a) Assessment of student needs

(b) Occupational therapy and/or physiotherapy specific input with students

(c) Program planning, development and review

(d) Assessment, prescription and review of aids and equipment

(e) Involvement in the student’s individualised planning process

(f) In-service training for others

(g) Liaison with, and education for, parents/carers

(h) Liaison with other agencies as needed.

Referral process 2011

Referrals can be made by teachers and members of the educational team involved with an eligible student. Parent consent is required when a referral is made.

The Service Request Form and Parent / Caregiver Permission Form (available http://education.qld.gov.au/studentservices/learning/disability/specialists/pt/index.html ) must be completed by the referrer and can be sent to:

The request will then be processed and prioritised according to a range of factors and the school will be notified by letter of the outcome of their request.

 

SPEECH-LANGUAGE THERAPY (SLT) SERVICE

Eligibility Criteria 2011

EQ Speech-Language Therapy services may be available for;

• Students enrolled in State education institutions or children registered or Early Childhood Development Programs and services; and
• Students with special needs in communication who are experiencing barriers to learning, including difficulties: understanding, requesting and expressing information; relating to teachers and peers; reading and writing; expressing needs, abilities and interests; participating in group activities; developing a positive self-concept; or using appropriate behaviour.

EQ SLPs undertake a wide range of activities to ensure a quality service including:

a) direct services to students

b) indirect services to students

c) services to schools

d) service management and accountability
